THE BLUR BETWEEN COLLECTING ART AND INVESTING

Artist Statement

My inspiration for this project emerged from what I believe is a growing institutional push to package and market art as an investment. For new and aspiring collectors, this increasingly blurs the boundary between collecting and investing.

The distortion begins when art is marketed primarily for financial return. The titles participate in that absurdity by making fictional forecasts and exaggerated promises that appeal to greed. Titles such as “MR. ___, ARE YOU A SOPHISTICATED ART COLLECTOR?” and “Mr. ___, YOU KNOW ART ALWAYS OUTPERFORMS THE S&P 500. RIGHT?” critique the financialization of art by mocking its sales pitch.

Visually, the paintings use geometry and color to present two separate systems, the stock market and the art world. Color separates the fields, but when forms or colors from one system appear in the other, the two are perceived as a single system, reflecting the growing misconception that collecting art and investing are the same thing.

By rotating and reconfiguring the same artwork, I show how presentation can alter perception without changing the object. When art is packaged as an investment, it helps create the illusion that collecting art and investing are the same thing.

Do you collect because the artwork moves you, or because institutions have shaped your perception of art as an investment?
