Art Investing In The Primary Market. A Beginner's Guide to Investing in Art

What is the Primary Art Market?

If you think of art as an investment, the primary market is the riskiest territory.

It’s also where the biggest opportunities live.

Those jaw-dropping auction numbers you hear about?
They often start right here, before there's a track record, before supply and demand have shaped the price.

You're buying early. Sometimes very early.
And with that, there’s potential for huge upside.
But also? The risk of ending up with something... worthless.

The primary market is where a work is sold for the very first time, directly from the artist or the gallery or advisor representing them.

Prices here are usually the lowest they’ll ever be. (Caution)

Collectors in this space are speculating. They’re betting this artist will be the next big thing, and the piece they’ve acquired will skyrocket in value.

Some hit it big. Others end up with dust collectors.
That’s the nature of early bets.

The most competitive primary markets in the world?
New York and London.
That’s where the top galleries operate, and where serious collectors search for emerging talent.

Free Advice: How to Buy Like a Pro
This is what I recommend to clients, especially those who want to live with the artwork, not just invest in it and stash it away.

Try this when walking through a gallery or auction preview:

Don’t stop walking.
Seriously. You’re not there to browse or chit-chat.
You’re testing your instinct.

Walk past every piece without pausing until one stops you.

If something pulls you to a halt, pay attention.
You didn’t plan to stop, but it reached you. It cut through.

Now stand there for 60 seconds.
No more, no less. Just take it in.

If it moved you enough to stop, honor that. Then?
Walk away.

No photos. No questions. No follow-up. Just leave.

Let it sit with you overnight.

If you’re still thinking about it tomorrow?
Buy it.

If not?
It wasn’t strong enough.

Ready to Make Your First Move?
That’s how to invest in the primary market.
You can navigate it on your own.

Or, if you’d like to work with me as your art advisor, I’d love to help.

Art Investing In The Secondary Market A Beginner's Guide To Investing In Art In The Secondary Market

The Secondary Art Market Guide

For those seeking a stable, data-driven approach, the secondary market offers proven opportunities. These artworks have established track records and are recognized by leading institutions worldwide—think of them as the blue-chip stocks of the art world. With higher liquidity and artworks that tend to resell more easily than those in the primary market, this market offers greater flexibility and, I believe, presents strong long-term growth potential.

I specialize in collecting art with a strategic approach, focusing on secondary market works that, I believe, combine stability with growth potential. My strategy centers on acquiring art that stands the test of time, offering both potential financial rewards and enduring cultural value.
